Thread: My story of tying to get topical finasteride perscription

  1. Default My story of tying to get topical finasteride perscription

So I got a script for finasteride and it was a huge hassle to get originally from dermatologist (had to wail 3 months for an appointment) so I have been going to a walk in clinic to refill the perspiration for the past year and a half. Anyway I went to the walk in clinic and asked if they would write me a prescription for topical finasteride and they freaked out...

I tried reasoning with them saying that Im already on finasteride so if anything this is way more safe etc but they wouldn't budge. Really offensive when doctors doing take you seriously. As if this wasn't bad enough she started questioning wether I have hairloss and said she need to see my dermatology report. JUST LOL

I have developed a very deep hatred for doctors in this country.

@WhiteRice15 To be completely honest, I didn't know that a topical form of this medication was even available. You mentioned that the oral medication seemed to have stopped working for you. Is there a similar medication you could try? I really don't understand why your physician, or any physician for that matter, would have a problem prescribing you this med. Have you tried calling the original dermatologist who prescribed you this med and having them call it into your pharmacy? I'd take one of my original containers with me and try a different walk in clinic. I just don't understand what the hassle would be in trying to get this med...what am I missing???

  7. day 60 now and still have ED after quitting. hairloss is starting to pick up again pretty fast

  8. I went back on finasteride. Did not want to lose any more hair.

I also went to see another doctor and even though he is really nice and a warm person he still did not write me the script for it. He said that even though he wants to its not FDA approved to be used topically and can potentioly cause issues. This sucks because a) in Canada you dont need to be FDA approved b) hes just trying to cover his ass and not do anything slightly off the books.

At this point Im not sure what to do or who to see. This doctor is really nice and it seems he has no problems doing my blood-work every 3 weeks to monitor my hormone levels, my previous docor said that if she did that she would be encouraging my use (which made me wanna kill her).

I have started using vaginal estrogen on my scalp. My theory is that it should absorb less that topical estrogens and if I use it in small enough quantities I should be able to limit systemic absorption.

So he turned out to be a bit of a liar. First he lied about not being able to prescribe it to me because it is not FDA approved, then he lied about being ok with doing my blood-work once a month. Just smh at these doctors. I had my second appointment with him today and I was hoping to explain to him why topical finasteride is much safer but he just was not willing to listen. I even suggested calling the pharmacy that makes it but to no avail.

Incredibly frusturating dealing with all these incompetent doctors when trying to deal with my problem. I wonder if they are this incompetent with all the other issues as well. Basically all the do is momorize as much information as possible and recite that information that they read when needed. They have no critical thinking skills at all. As if this isnt bad enough, they charge the goverment like $200 per 30 minute sessions. So basically I went in there and he got $200 to spit a load of nonsense in my face.

    Life is beautiful!

I have a referral to a dermatologist now that if Im lucky Ill get to see in 2 months and if I am very lucky yet again he might prescribe me topical finasteride. This is a really special case where I am super frustrated because my hands are tied. I cant get the special gel formulation in which they mix the finasteride powder because the company that makes the gel only sells it to specific pharmacies. So instead of going online and ordering the medication that I want, all I am able to do is go online and complain.
