    Default 2 trips to ER

    Hello
I don't know if anyone has had anything like this.
So about 3 weeks a go I ended up in ER due to pain in lower left abdomen.
I DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE. just want to put that out there....and I am single. My income only.
    I am broke.
    Now that's outta the way.
So I awoke with pain...excruciating pain on my left lower side.
Er did ct, xrays, blood work , ekg.
The only thing that showed up was acute constipation..bladder infection...ibs.
    So they gave me something
..they said to help with spasms. And an antibiotic.
So I leave. Pain doesn't go away. I am having normal bms prior to all this. A week later I eat lunch 2 hours later I am once again in excruciating pain....back to Er. Ct again....constipation. So Dr 2 says the medication for spasms slows down the gi track. Refers me to GI specialist (400. For appt with NP ) But again I am having a bm daily......so he sends me home with a bottle of magnesium citrate. And an enema. So I take the mag citrate and in the am have 3 or 4 very loose stools.
Says see specialist. So I went at a cost of 400 with a Np. She says diverticulitis would have shown up on ct scan. Recommend miralax and gave me samples of 2 different laxatives. Take 1 one week and the other next week.
So back at work I am in excruciating pain. Called gi place....they said to add the other laxative (she said dont take it and leave the house). So I take that in PM. I am eating bland and feeling very week. So someone suggests a boost/ensure product....puked that right up. Sent home from work again.
Another call to gi place. Now they want me to start on medicine that helps with spasms...the same medication that she told me I shouldn't take because it causes constipation. So I am on 3 laxatives and now they want me on something to slow the bowel?
    Does this make any sense?
Meanwhile I am in pain...switched to high fiber diet. Asked about gabapentin for nerve pain. Nope.
    Thanks for listening.

    @NB12345,

Sorry you are in so much pain. It makes me crazy that they won't give you anything for it!! I'm no expert but I do suffer from bouts of IBS. I know you can be constipated while still having Dailey BM's. Weird but true. (So my doctor said)
I too, get some left side pain lower abdominal pain.(it literally feels like death) fyi; protein shakes do a number on my gut, I can't do ensure or anything like that.
I don't have it all the time but stress makes it 10 times worse.
My Dr. gave me anti spasm meds too, dicyclomine 20mg 4 x daily. Sometimes i take 2 at once. (Helps a little) I also do a combo of miralax and Imodium. It's all guess work and I've yet to find an exact formula that works taking all 3.
I also have a rx for tramadol. (Which can make you more constipated) it helps very little with the pain. I don't think I've offered you too much help, other than having similar issues.
Also, sounds like way too many different laxatives for you to be taking.. Again, I'm no expert but that seems like too much!
Make sure you stay hydrated. I drink tons of water. That does seem to help. Also a hot water bottle or a heating pad for my gut helps me a lot.
I'm sorry you are going thru this and in so much pain. Take care and know that you're not alone. Peace, Song

Pain in the lower left abdomen could be any one of a dozen different things, some of them quite nasty. Are the specialists taking enough time with you when you have these visits? a 5-minute hit-and-run consultation is not going to do it. If they are charging you $400 for a visit, you need to get answers and that takes time. This is why I avoid the medical system whenever possible, these doctors just take your money and fob you off to the next guy. Meanwhile, you go broke trying to get a proper diagnosis.

You might want to research your symptoms and try to narrow it down a bit. You'll have better odds if you go into these visits informed.

I'd imagine our UK members read threads like this and just shudder at what we go through here.

    Drug criminalization is modern-day slavery.

  5. Gall bladder or kidney stone maybe? I agree with @GreenThumb . Not sure why all the docs are focusing on your intestines.

Jeez sorry you’re going through all this. An acquaintance of mine recently went in for a cat scan of his abdomen (I think it was a cat scan.) It turned out he has a hernia. But they couldn’t do anything because fixing it would be considered “cosmetic.” So I think he just has to live with it.

    Keep us updated!

Hi @NB12345 I’m a semi retired doc. Can u tell me what sort of pain u r getting, ie sharp, dull etc. Also when does the pain come on? Is it just after eating or before u have a BM? How long does it last? Do u have any blood in your stools? We can narrow it right down if u r able to answer these questions. The ct scan will have ruled out most of the nasties.
