    Post Bank Transfers Suck

    Second time using a bank since WU/MG no longer accepted by my 'foreign friends'. I paid $40 to send $135. The worst part was the woman who assisted me at the bank. I felt like I was ordering child-porn or a bomb (that tags this thread). I tried last week and a different staff person refused to do it because my DMV photo ID was expired by 22 days. There was no question about my identity because I maintain checking/savings accounts at that branch for several years. So I returned with more ID a few days ago. $40 is high but the money got through in a few hours and my package shipped next day.

    I finally got a reply from my prior 'foreign friend' with whom I lost a payment last year. He wrote that his bank account (IN) had been seized and he lost many customers. I feel bad for the guy but I already found another. It's difficult to transmit after already losing close to $200.

    Wow, personal liberties keep getting pinched back like dead-headed flowers, huh? And 99% of the time, it's for homeland security... Right
    I think Ben Franklin was the one who said "Those who would trade essential Liberty for temporary Safety shall soon have neither."

  4. I've been searching the forum for a thread about this. I just had a vendor who offered bank transfer, and I was wondering how well it works. I occasionally send money back and forth this way with a family member and it's never been any big deal. I just write a check and give them the bank and the account number to deposit it into. But, then, that's a transaction within the same country.

    This may be veering off-topic, but I'm surprised more vendors don't offer COD. I suppose maybe it brings more scrutiny, but I remember when COD was all the rage with Internet vendors, when nobody wanted to send their credit card numbers off across the interwebs.

    International bank transfers, WU, MG, and the like are show stoppers for me. I would either go for crypto currency (with discounts) or CC payment.

    I don't know how it is in the US but in Turkey all banks offer "virtual CC" which is a second CC with no physical card, connected to your real CC, with a different card number and CVC than your real card. You can create it, specify it's limit (not exceeding limit of the real card) via the bank's internet or mobile banking service, and use it freely anywhere on internet like a real card.

    Before a transaction, I set its limit just above the transaction value. After the transaction I reset its limit to zero, which is unnecessary because the transaction itself tops the limit anyway.

    It's so convenient and safe to use on internet.

    Also, via internet/mobile banking service, I revoke e-commerce ability from my real card, so it can only be used physically.

    About 10 years ago, one of my credit card companies offered a device, that plugged into a USB port. When you were shopping on the web, you put your card into it (it was a small card reader) and it would generate a one time card number. It actually worked great, but they discontinued it. My guess was there was some security issue. As far as I know, they don’t have temp numbers here, unless a card company has it, and I just don’t know about it. Considering how much they advertise, I think I would know, but that’s no guarantee.

    @M77,
    The virtual card I spoke about is permanent. Just no physical card, and an ability to change it's limit easily, as often as you like.

    I think it's a service of banks, though. (rather than of CC operators like Visa or MC).

    I’m pretty sure that works the same way here, as far as MasterCard and Visa. They are just the networks that license out their tech to banks, and other financial institutions. But as far as I know, we don’t have that virtual card available. I would sleep better with it!
