The only reason I feel I personally would need health insurance is if I had to go to the hospital(one night in the hospital could cost you a lifetime of bills), as I mentioned earlier that my doctor has me on a sliding scale.

well that’s the whole point of insurance - to cover the unexpected catastrophe. It’s such a joke that we keep getting completely screwed by Heath insurance companies. I laugh when folks say they don’t want government coming between them and their doctor. Health insurance companies come between us and our doctors on a MASSIVE scale now and we still somehow believe that’s better? I have medicare AND a secondary plan and STILL have to pay sizeable out of pocket costs. It’s a complete ripoff. Why do we still think it’s acceptable to have private companies siphon off 25 percent or more profit from health insurance? It’s madness...
Y’know I think good health insurance should cover more than Just catastrophes.
it should cover preventative stuff (regular Tests like mammograms, checkups)...stuff that makes catastrophes less likely.

Here in US we are very dependent on employer-based insurance. if your job offers nothing (and you can’t afford ACA/“Obamacare”), you’re in a position where say catching pneumonia or Covid can bankrupt you.
It really doesn’t make sense IMO.

I’m hoping to retire early, but have to talk to my advisor re costs of ACA should I stop working and lose the employer insurance.
it would be at min 10K US per year.
I‘m fortunate that I can likely afford that, at least til I get to 65 and get Medicare.
But many, many cannot.

Absolutely! If it wasn’t tied to employment a whole LOT of folks would retire earlier which actually helps the younger work force. It’s just ridiculous our whole system. Again, Obamacare added all of the preventive stuff for no cost too, which is another no brainer since it actually LOWERS costs. The insurance companies know they continue to live on this ridiculous fear of “socialism” and “the government is trying to control us.” So far that message of fear is working. It’s so frustrating...
